Halloween is nearly here! It’s the time of year to go ALL OUT when it comes to parties. What better way to welcome your victims…er we mean party guests…than with a delicious cup of Kiwano Slime-ade?
Spiky, deep orange and with a deliciously refreshing green, jello-like centre, the Kiwano melon looks like a fruit that could’ve been dreamed up just for Halloween.
However it’s an all natural fruit we grow in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Originally from central and southern Africa, the Kiwano is part of the Cucurbitaceae family and grows in a bushy vine along the ground, like a watermelon.
A cup of Kiwano Slime-ade is not only delicious, but also – unlike many Halloween treats – incredibly good for you!
The 100% candy-free Halloween treat
This is one Halloween food you can let the kids go to town on. Kiwano is hydrating, very low in natural fruit sugars, and is a source of magnesium, potassium and dietary fibre.
The vibrant green pulp found inside Kiwano is also completely on-theme for Halloween. Cool, slippery and refreshing, it’s made up on thousands of tiny green globules, each encasing a tiny thin white seed. The taste is cool, slippery and refreshing – with a flavour we’d describe as a mix of just-ripe banana, tart lime and passionfruit.
How to extract the green pulp inside Kiwano melon
Getting the pulp out is really easy. Simply slice in half, loosen up the pulp by inserting a butter knife several times, then squeeze the pulp into a bowl (mind the horns when you do give it a squeeze.

What to do:
Pour an inch of pulp into the bottom of your glass. Squeeze in a little agave syrup and top with ice and soda water. Give it a swirl with a straw and you’re done! Add a slice of Kiwano as a garnish.
