Find out what’s on our 2021 Halloween Bucket List

Nailing the theme with its vibrant, glowing orange skin and spiky exterior, Kiwano is made for Halloween fun. Check out what your favourite Kiwano growers will be conjuring up this October to get in the Halloween spirit.

Kiwano definitely has the kooky looks that make it Halloween-perfect, but there’s even more once you cut it open. Inside the skin is a vibrant green pulp that has the consistency of a not-quite-set jello. This lightly fruity pulp can be used to make a range of creepily delicious healthy Halloween treats.

We’ve put together our ultimate 2021 Halloween Bucket List to help you conjure up some spooky, kooky Halloween magic with this super healthy fruit. Most of the items on our list are kid-friendly…but we’ve added a little treat to the list for grown ups too.

(Shhh…don’t tell the kids)

What’s more most of the items on our Halloween Bucket List are perfect antidote to all that celebratory sugar. Kiwano is very low in the natural sugars found in all fruits (check out our blog 10 of the best low sugar fruits), made up of nearly 90% water, and is a source of magnesium, potassium and dietary fiber.

While it may look on the freaky side, the taste is nothing to be feared! It’s a delicious, refreshingly cool, and subtle fruity taste that’s hard to pin down. The best description we’ve come up with is a mix of just ripe banana, passionfruit and a hit of lime. And if you’re unsure just how to prepare this refreshingly different fruit, head here for a quick video explainer on how to get the pulp out.

Halloween Bucket List, we’re coming at ya! Here’s what’s we’ll be doing this year with our favourite Halloween fruit.

1. Ditching a glass for something spookier

Instagrammer @chenaholic used the whole Kiwano to create his amazing rum-based cocktail “Kiwano Paradise”.

Kiwano skin is very sturdy. With the pulp scooped out the skin can be used as a quirky all-natural bowl to serve up dips, salsas or ice cream sundaes from (check out our Instagram Reels for how to turn a Kiwano into a bowl). We’ve also seen them used as a very cute cup for cocktails.

2. Making an exotic Jack O Lantern

Pumpkin Jack O Lanterns…so 2020! For something completely different, slice the top off, and scoop out all the Kiwano. Delicately cut some eye holes in the skin with a small paring knife. Pop a tea light candle inside and use as a small, quirky Jack O Lantern.

3. Conjuring a Halloween-themed brunch

All that trick or treating is going to need a decent – and healthy – breakfast. Hit up our Kiwano recipes for all your monster themed delights, that also pack a mean nutritional punch. Our Kiwano green smoothie is a delicious fruity brew with sneaky spinach for extra goodness. Kiwano pulp is delicious dolloped on pancakes – perhaps on top of these vegan pumpkin pancakes by the Minimalist Baker.

4. Shaking up a lean, mean (and green) margarita

Try out our super-fruity, mysteriously delicious recipe that puts a spin on the classic margarita.

Got a Halloween party happening? This easy to make margarita is great for a Halloween theme – the quirky orange garnish and vibrant green hue giving off a kinda mad scientist lab vibe. There’s a few ingredients but it’s only 2 steps to make – plus who can resist something made in a cocktail shaker?

5. Tricking (and treating) the kids with some Healthy Halloween Jello

The jelly-like pulp inside a Kiwano makes for a super easy, healthy and intriguing Halloween snack for curious kids. The Kiwano pulp is made up of very thin white seeds encased inside a green jelly globule – meaning you don’t have any seed crunch when you eat it. Serve with a spoon or a thick metal straw for slurping also works well. To make these extra spooky, serve in a scooped out half shell of a Kiwano.
