Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration of all things Mexican, including – of course – the culture’s amazing food. This year we’re introducing people to the little bit of culinary magic that happens when you combine our favourite fruit, the Kiwano, with Mexican flavours and style. Our Cinco de Mayo recipes are fresh, delicious and super easy to make – in fact every recipe here can be whipped up in under 5 minutes. What’s not to like?
Kiwano and Mexican food: a match made in foodie heaven
Refreshing and lightly fruity, Kiwano works well in both sweet and savoury dishes. It’s a flavour that’s hard to pin down – the closest description we’ve come up with is a mix of just-ripe banana, passionfruit and lime. Inside the Kiwano’s bright orange skin is a bright green pulp – this is the part you eat. To remove the pulp simply slice through the middle of the Kiwano, loosen up the pulp with a knife then scoop or squeeze it out of the skin. The pulp can be eaten fresh or added to fresh salsas, salads, guacamole and cocktails to add a delicious twist on classic Mexican dishes.

Fresh Kiwano Salsa
This is our twist on the classic pico de Gallo. The simple trick of stirring in some Kiwano pulp adds a layer of refreshing flavour that works a bit of magic with the classic tomato, cilantro and red onion, plus as much or little chilli as you prefer. Chock full of plant nutrition, this is one to load onto corn chips, or dollop on tacos, nachos and grilled meats.

5 ingredient Kiwano-Pineapple salsa
Five ingredients – all fruit, vegetables and herbs – are the base for this knockout fresh salsa. This salsa has a fruitier side, but any sweetness from the pineapple is nicely balanced by the cilantro and chilli. Packed with nutrients, it’s possibly the best justification for eating corn chips we’ve ever come across.

Kiwano Guacamole
When Kiwano met Avocado… something pretty darn tasty happened. The freshness of Kiwano lightens the creaminess of avo, and adds a subtle fruity flavour. A hit of cilantro, chili and red onion bring out the best in both fruits. Everyone has their “best ever guac” recipe – this is ours.

Kiwano Margarita
Who doesn’t love a marg? Margarita is a drink that has the ability to turn a friendly gathering into a fiesta. The addition of Kiwano juice to a margarita enhances all the flavours of the classic version. A slice of Kiwano also makes a perfect Cinco de Mayo colour themed garnish. Whip up a batch and see if you can get those so-called “people that don’t dance” hitting the dancefloor.
